Chapter Eighteen

Back in the prison room, Nathaniel dropped me against a wall. It took all my concentration to focus on the plaster-covered vampires in front of me. Nathaniel dragged Derek by his ankle across the room to the pole supporting Sam.

Bruised arms chained behind his back and slumped over with his robe bunched around his hips, Sam looked like he was the one who rolled through a brick wall. At his neck, deep punctures drooled blood.

All my locked limbs refused my attempts to move out of the crouched position I had landed in. Forcing air into my freezing lungs, I coughed up a dust cloud of plaster.

“Sam,” I wheezed.

Nathaniel whirled around. “Do not speak another word in my presence. Move only to take breath.” He stormed toward Sam. Releasing Derek’s ankle, Nathaniel muttered a string of curses in French. My reason for studying the language in high school came to fruition. At that moment, I understood the vampire had called me a scum dog, a bitch from hell.

He sliced one of his claws across the inside of Sam’s elbow. Cradling Derek’s head, Nathaniel angled Derek’s mouth to the wound.

Sam groaned, then cracked open his eyes. His groan turned into a throaty growl as he fought to free his arm from the bloodsucker.

Going against Nathaniel’s order, I shook my head. Struggling with a vampire latched onto an artery—not smart. My movement attracted Sam’s attention.

Locking his glowing eyes to mine, Sam stilled.

Keeping his mouth sealed to Sam’s arm, Derek pulled himself to his knees.

“The hound still has use. Take only what you need.” Nathaniel stood. “Guards are on their way to provide you with proper nourishment. The queen’s arrival is delayed due to a pack of werewolves scampering around the city. I assured her—”

“Tessa?” Derek uttered between gulps.

Nathaniel tensed. Still watching Derek, he spoke at me, “Unless she wants to explain to the queen why she is covered in plaster, she will make her way into the restroom where she will shower and then dress in the garments provided.”

Careful not to put weight on my injured foot, I used the wall for support as I stood. A group of guards trudged down the hall toward the room. As much as I didn’t want to leave Sam, Nathaniel had a valid point. I’d flushed my golden ticket out of the torture session with the Vampire Queen. Knowledge of my field trip would only make it worse.

When I closed the bathroom door, a group of guards entered the room. Not one peep came from the men.

“The wolf attacked. The fight landed them through a wall.” A master of blurring the truth, Nathaniel kept his new tongue from turning to ash as he spoke to the guards. “Send a cleaning crew to the library. This is to be handled before our queen arrives. You. You. And that tall one by the door, come here. Pull up your sleeves. I need the rest at their backs.”

After the guards’ footfalls moved into the ordered positions, silence followed.

Peeling off my clothes, I caught my reflection in the mirror.
