Eva’s scent grew stronger with each passing mile and soon enough he’d skidded to a stop outside an old, crumbling manor that looked as if it’d been abandoned in the 1930s.

The windows were boarded up and there was a sense of dejection and decay everywhere from the broken steps to the sad, drooping roofline but he sensed immediately that all was not as it seemed.

Elijah shifted back into his human form just in time for Rook to pull up in the Rover.

Rook popped out and tossed some clothes at him, saying as Elijah dressed, “Nice place to stage a world coup, right? It has the appropriate air of gloom and despair.”

“Don’t trust your eyes. This place is probably stronger than Fort Knox. I know Eva is here. Let’s go see what we can see.”

Rook handed him a gun and then pulled his own.

“Let’s do this,” Rook said, grinning. “Tonight’s as good as any to die.”

“I love your enthusiasm,” Elijah quipped dryly and moved silently in the lead. Instead of taking the front door, he went around to the back, scoping out the landscape and looking for anything that might suggest a ripple in the illusion.

Rook paused to ask quizzically, “What are you doing?” He gestured to the back door. “Let’s go in through the back. Surprise them.”

He shook his head, looking for tiny, minute clues. “An illusion spell is like a blanket that’s tossed over the top of whatever you’re trying to hide. Sometimes if the spell is cast in haste, there’s holes in the fabric, allowing the truth to bleed through.”

“Ahh,” Rook said. “That’s some crazy shit in your world. What I wouldn’t have given for some illusion spells when I was a kid. My mom was a clean freak. I’d have cast that shit all over my room so I could’ve gotten out of all day cleaning frenzies.”

“Magic comes at a cost every time it’s used,” Elijah said, his gaze snagging on something. A trick of the eye? No, he realized as he crept closer. An incongruent patch of cement masonry peeking through the sagging, rotting siding of the manor. He smiled. “I’m willing to bet that back door leads straight into a trap because the real door…is right here…”

He slid his hand through the illusion hole and touched cement, feeling for a latch or a knob. His fingers found a door handle and he carefully opened the door as the illusion wavered and went transparent, revealing the truth behind the facade. A cement strong hold appeared along with the steel door.

Rook’s gaze widened with surprise. “Now that’s one helluva way to deter solicitations.”

“Come on, let’s see who’s home.”
