Chapter Nineteen

The screech of a water faucet roused me into consciousness. As the bliss-filled brain fog rolled away, my vision sharpened onto the overhead mirror’s crime scene reflection. More blood than the tattered dress hid my nudity while my left shoulder throbbed and oozed from Sam’s bite. Even though the wound had bled, it didn’t add up to the amount covering me. I palpated the unmarred skin of my throat.

“I healed my bites.” Derek stood at the open bathroom door. From my vantage point, the predawn sky hooded his face in shadows, yet I’d a clear view of his blood-smeared torso. Worry nibbled at my mind. Something was off. Shit. Everything was off.

I grasped the dress’ scrap material over my exposed parts and the jostling movements sent my stomach sloshing. The coppery-ting of Sam’s blood lingered in my mouth. Face flushing, cheeks watering, I crawled to the edge of the bed and retched.

Lucky for unlucky Sam, he missed the blood spray. Feet away, unconscious and unmoved from where I’d left him on the floor, he breathed. Thankfully. My bite wasn’t neat or dainty. Botched-up puncture marks serrated his jugular while a halo of blood framed his head.

“He’ll live.” Derek walked toward the bed, tilting his head at the bedroom doors. “They listen.”

Outside the room, hushed voices muttered about having to drive corpses around town. Ben’s voice drifted in and out. When he spoke, the room fell silent. Good for him, taking control.

As I shifted to sit upright, a mystery fluid ran down my back, triggering my body to convulse. I dry-heaved until black spots danced through my vision. Rubbing my runny nose with the back of my bloodstained hand, I groaned. If I sniffed any more blood, I’d pass out—again. Derek caught me in mid-stumble off the bed.

“The wolves will race in here with your struggles,” he warned, lifting me into his arms.

To keep a visual on Sam, I twisted in Derek’s hold. “They have noses and we’re all bathing in gore.”

“Markings are bloody.” Derek grunted as my knee crushed against his ribs.

Void of all emotion, he carried me off to the bathroom. Even with our half-naked bodies pressed together, there were no stolen caresses or soft murmurs. Dread seeped into my shivering bones. “Are you okay?”

“I am well enough,” he said.

At his elusive answer, my mind flipped to panic mode. Before I could form words into a question, Derek closed the bathroom door. Stiffly, he lowered me to my feet in front of a clawfoot tub filled to the brim with water. When he went for the dress’ zipper, I tensed.

He dropped his hands. “You tremble as if it is the first time I have witnessed your nudity.”

“Outside dreamland, the times when you have seen me naked, I was your prisoner or saving your ass.” I turned to face him. “I’d prefer for our real first time that I’m not covered in blood.”

Derek extinguished the desire blazing with his gaze, leaving me to peer at his emotionless vampire mask. The feelings camouflage meant bad news waited behind his next breath.
