Chapter 90

Gabriel

I went straight to the interrogation rooms when I got back. I practically ran down the three flights of stairs, carrying my bag with me, deep into the palace.

I found Cerone standing in one of the observation rooms with her arms folded. I threw my bag down into a corner and joined her. The young blonde man – Johnny – was in the holding room on the other side of the glass. He was handcuffed to a table and apparently screaming things at the glass even though he couldn’t see us. I pressed a green button on the panel in front of me, and his voice streamed into the room.

“- you fucking parasites. Do you hear me? And you tell those fucking bitches, Julie and Fiona, that they’re fucking dead! Do you hear me? They’re dead!”

Cerone hit the red button and the room went silent again.

“He’s been like that since he woke up. Ranting and screaming at us. Calling us monsters and parasites. He’s guaranteed us that we’re all dead. Every vampire in the building. Plus Julie and Fiona, like you heard.”

“Anybody talk to him yet?”

She sighed. “I tried and Orleande tried. All we got was screaming and death threats.”

“I want to talk to him. Even if it’s more of the same,” I said.

“Good luck,” she replied.

I grabbed something from my bag, then walked around to the holding room entrance. I took a deep breath.

This part was never easy.

I went in and closed the door.

Johnny changed his topic mid-sentence. “What do you want, you undead motherfucker?”

I sat down across the table from him. “I want to talk about Julie.”

“What about that dumb bitch? You tell her she’s dead. Fucking dead, you hear me!” He shouted that last part at the one-way mirror.

“How did you two meet?” I asked, keeping my voice calm and steady.

He was silent for a few minutes, sizing me up. “What, you’re so old you forgot how to pick up chicks? Dumbass.”

I shrugged. “Was it in a bar? At the grocery store? I’m curious.”

He made a sound with his lips. “That’s old school. I found her through an app, old man. Do you know what an app is?”

I leaned forward. “It’s like a program, right?”

Johnny rolled his eyes. “Yes, it’s like a program. It’s on your phone. Endless supply of women right at your fingertips.” He sat back in his chair.

“An endless supply? What made you pick Julie then?”

“Her rack, old man.” He motioned with hands, then trailed off. “And she had over five hearts.”

I wrinkled my forehead. “No, she doesn’t.”

“In the game, you fucking moron. She was a serious player. I knew she’d lead me straight to some bloodsucking parasites. And I was right. Jackpot.” He spread his hands wide.

“Right, right.” I sat back in my chair. “So, how many of us did you kill?”

His jaw tightened, and he tapped his thumbs on the table. “Only one. That fucking Fiona was going to be my second.”

“When did you kill your first?”

He avoided my eyes.

“Come on,” I leaned forward, “you know you want to tell me.
