MALAKAI

Lord, I promise if you let this date end early, I will go to church more. Hell, I was willing to donate all of my money to every charity in the area if it meant I could end this after dessert. As a matter of a fact, I wasn’t even sure I could get through dinner, let alone dessert.

I was on my fifth date, and even though Dr. Parker had found some great women, none of them were the women for me. None of them were Avery.

Avery. It had been almost two weeks since we’d kissed, and even though after the fifth day of avoiding me, I was still checking for her when Tyler not-so-subtly mentioned she was stopping by the office.

It was hard to believe that she’d been working with me for over a month already. She only stopped in the office periodically, and I’d learned from Serenity that she’d landed some other big clients as well. I was proud of her and happy that her agency was taking off and making a name for itself in New York. But the selfish part of me wished it was still during that trial period when she came into the office every day.

“And then, when I was seven, I got my first crush on a boy. His name was Tommy, I think. Then at age eight, I got my first group of close girlfriends. We would braid each others hair and paint each others nail. But nine was a great year …”

I tried not to nod off as Cathy, my current date, continued to fill me in on each year of her life. The cameraman, Steve, was required to get enough footage to compose highlights for my sessions with Dr. Walker, but even he had left when she got to age four. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand why ages one through six had been so damn long. I mean, how the hell do you even remember that much at that age? All I remember doing back then was napping, eating, pooping, and playing with my brothers. Cathy was over here talking about those years in detail, down to the coloring books she owned at that time.

“We’re kindred spirits, Malakai. I know you feel it, too.”

I tuned back into the convo when I heard my name. “Sorry, what was that?” I had to have heard her wrong. Kindred spirits? How in the world did she figure that?

“Our energies connect,” she said, reaching over the table to grab my hand. “Just from touching you, I can feel a stronger force than I ever have. You have the spirit of a lion and I have the spirit of a deer. I’m your prey, Malakai. I’d be okay if you want to feed on me and give my remains to the rest of the wildlife.”

“Uh …”

“Don’t fight it, Malakai.” She gripped my hand tighter. “I was born to let you chase me. Catch me. Kill me. Feed off me.”

What the hell? I was two seconds away from snatching my hand from hers.
