A blacksmith hot forging a piece of metal
When metal is heated to its respective forging temperature, it transforms and becomes as soft as clay, allowing a blacksmith to create various products. Forging processes are classified according to the temperatures required to achieve molding. These are;
Cold forging â where metal is soft when cold and does not require heating
Warm forging â metal is heated slightly and forged
Hot forging â metal is heated to high temperatures to enable molding
As a beginner, the most important process worth mastering is hot forging, which is most commonly practiced and lays the foundation for the other processes.
On the other hand, a forge is the heating equipment used to heat the metal.
