Lawrence played multiple characters on the show, including Sheneneh Jenkins, the outspoken owner of Sheneneh’s Sho’ Nuff Hair Salon.

It rankled Lawrence that other Black entertainers would publicly criticize him. Cosby had called Def Comedy Jam, which Lawrence hosted from 1992 to 1993, “a minstrel show.”

“We can whisper in each other’s ears, ‘You know, there might be another way for you to do that,’” Lawrence told the Chicago Sun-Times in 1994. “But complaining about other black artists to the media—you’re starting a whole other thing over here.”
