By the time Degelow reported to Jasta 40 – a walk across the airfield – the war had taken several dramatic turns. Certainly, one of these was the arrival in France of fresh and well-supplied American troops. They were accompanied by pilots and observers, who were subsequently equipped with some of the best of the British and French aircraft. Finally, Germany’s position on the Western Front was weakened by the eventual failure of the German offensive to divide British and French forces.

Jagdstaffel 40 Background

Degelow’s new unit was formed nearly a year earlier. The German War Ministry had authorised the formation of a second large group of Jagdstaffeln on 26 June 191739 and the first of that number, Royal Saxon Jagdstaffel 40, was established at Flieger-Ersatz-Abteilung 6 in Grossenhain four days later.40 The new Staffel was organised by an aviation service veteran, Oberleutnant Arthur Schreiber, who left Hessian Fuss-Artillerie-Regiment Nr. 3 in November 1913 to join the Fliegertruppe and initially trained as aviation observer at FEA 3 in Darmstadt. Later posted to Flieger-Abteilung (A) 205, he was shot down and wounded near Verdun on 22 July 1916.41 After recuperating from his wounds, Schreiber was posted as Adjutant to FEA 7 in Braunschweig. Then he was transferred to Grossenhain to become Offizier zur besonderen Verwendung [officer seconded for special assignment] of Jasta 40.
