Cooper broke away, holding me at arm’s length and scrutinising me for a long moment before releasing me. “Come on,” he said, grabbing my hand abruptly, turning and heading down the alleyway at a brisk walk. I let him steer me.

I glanced back, half-expecting him to have changed his mind and followed us, but the alleyway was blissfully clear. Cooper was looking back, too, and we exchanged a glance before he picked up to a jog and lead us out to the street.

He directed us towards the main doors of the building, and his car was parked — quite dumped, actually — in front of it. He unlocked it as we approached, heading to the passenger door first and throwing it open for me, and I climbed inside.

He went around the car, slid in beside me, and started the engine quickly, throwing the car into gear and wheel-spinning a little in his haste to get away.

We both watched the mirrors as he drove, and finally I started to relax. It really wasn’t going to pursue us, not then. Because it was daylight? That meant we didn’t have too much time before we did have to worry about it, but it meant I could at least breathe. Could try to rationalise what to do, how to explain what had happened, could plan how to avoid being murdered by that psycho. Could try not to relive what had happened.

The cell. The unconscious creature. The bite. And the mental image of him grabbing it…

I’d been scared. I’d been hurt. I’d run for my goddamn life. But the mental image of… of what he did, and then just standing back up after it. That was what was playing incessantly in my head.

Could it really possibly be true? At that point, I thought it had to be true…

If not, I applauded him for being truly dedicated to his art.

I reached up, ran my fingers over my neck against my will. That meant I really was tainted. Not turned, because I wasn’t like those, but tainted. It was inside of me in one way or another.

We stopped at a traffic light, and on one hand it was jarring, so normal after everything that had happened, and on the other, the last thing we needed was to be pulled over. Or to cause an accident.

I turned in my seat, just to make sure we weren’t being followed, but all I saw was the occasional, innocent car. I was still shaking, I realised.

Cooper turned to me, and I must have worn my fear on my face, because his own fell.

“Sir—Jesse? Are you okay?” he asked, voice uneven.

I looked at him, stared, hearing him but not really able to process the words. What exactly had happened to me? What was going to happen to me?

“Jess...?” Cooper said, and he reached out and dropped his hand onto my knee. I still just blinked at him, wanting to tell him what was wrong almost as much as I wanted him to never find out.
