Male (left); female (right)

A large hummingbird, yellowish-green above. The male has blackish underparts and a brilliant green gorget. The female is the only hummingbird in its range with whitish underparts, and white tips to the tail-feathers. Black bill slightly downcurved. Endemic to the West Indies: common on Hispaniola, frequents dry coastal areas of Puerto Rico, and is rare in the Virgin Islands. Prefers open areas and scrub; frequents gardens and coffee plantations. Feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers, but also hawks insects from a perch. Declining due to encroachment by the Green-throated Carib.

GREEN MANGO Anthracothorax viridis 11–14cm
