Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorusplatycercus)

Rare spring and occasional fall migrant over the entire plateau. Spring migrants have been reported between late March and late May, with almost all of the records from the first half of April. Fall migrants have been reported between late July and early November. On at least four occasions, fall migrants have lingered through the winter at feeders, two of which were in Austin suburbs. There are two summer reports of this species from the plateau. A male was photographed while visiting feeders at Kickapoo Cavern State Park from 14 to 16 June 1988. The other is a report of a successful nest at Lost Maples State Natural Area in 1960; however, there is no supporting documentation.
