Stilt Sandpiper

The Stilt Sandpiper is a small sandpiper often confused with a Dowitcher because they are of roughly the same size and the two birds are often found in mixed flocks. They also feed like Dowitchers, jabbing their long bills into shallow water in search of worms and other small invertebrates. Like many sandpipers, Stilts breed in the open Arctic tundra of North America and make a twice-yearly journey to and from their wintering grounds in northern South America. Some also winter along the Gulf Coast and in southern Florida. They are found along the East Coast and also in the central United States and Canada during spring and fall migration. In their breeding plumage, they have heavy bars on their underside and reddish cheek patches. This bird is a juvenile or an adult in the process of shedding breeding plumage. This Stilt Sandpiper was photographed at the East Pond at Jamaica Bay in late summer.
