2 EASTERN GROUND PARROT Pezoporus wallicus 29–33cm/11.5–13in

A long-tailed green parrot usually seen flying low over heath after being flushed. The back is green mottled with black and yellow, the throat and upper breast are grass green, and the lower breast to vent is yellow barred with dark green. It has a strong preference for dense, low-lying heaths and, in TAS, for button-grass plains. This dense habitat makes this bird notoriously difficult to find, as it spends most of the day well hidden, coming to feed on sides of paths only in very early morning or at dusk. The best means of locating birds is by listening at dusk or dawn for their distinctive buzzing calls. This parrot is patchily distributed from coastal regions of s. QLD, where rare, to TAS, where it is common in some areas. Well-known sites to search for it include Barren Grounds NR (NSW) and around Melaleuca (TAS).
