Serrated Bills Common Mergansers have long, narrow bills with serrated edges. They use the serrations like teeth to hold slippery fish.
Red Crossbill
Crossed Bills Red and White-winged Crossbills are northern finches with odd-looking crossed bills. When their mouths are closed, the tip of their upper bill crosses down over the lower bill, and the tip of the lower bill crosses up over the upper. In other species, a crossed bill would be considered a deformity. In crossbills, the arrangement works great for extracting pinecone seeds, their main food, from the cones. To get the seeds, crossbills push their bills under the scales of closed pinecones and bite to separate the scales. When the seeds are exposed, they use their tongues to extract them.
Room for the Tongue
All woodpeckers have very long tongues. A Red-bellied Woodpecker, for instance, has one that extends three times the length of its bill! When a woodpecker draws its tongue back into its mouth, it only fits by wrapping around the outside of the skull.
