DYLAN

I kept the sway of the swing gentle.

With Madison in my arms, I couldn’t think of a single place I’d rather be than right here. Not even flying.

That bothered me a little, but I was getting used to it.

Her hair smelled like magnolia and honeysuckle. She was such a little thing. I was having a hard time imagining her pregnant, so I didn’t try too hard with that image.

I would have to work up to that one. Just like every other man, I mused.

I loved that she was comfortable with silence. Flying, I was with my own thoughts for hours most days. I liked my own thoughts. I was comfortable with them.

And if I missed a few days of flying, I got antsy. Aunt Madison believed that that alone time was like a form of meditation. Said Uncle Kade was the same way as were all the other pilots she knew. She’d even written a paper on it, citing William Glasser’s positive addition theory. It had been published in a psychology journal.

I didn’t think she was wrong.

On the contrary. Most pilots believed they were addicted to flying, but it wasn’t the flying, it was the meditative silence.

At any rate, it would have been hard to be married to someone who chatted all the time. If Zoe turned out to be a talker, that was okay, too. I’d love her either way.

There was a hitch in the sway of the swing that reflected the hitch in my thinking.

So far, I’d known that I liked her and was attracted to her and wanted to do the right thing by her. Could tell her the latter, though, because it made her think that was my primary motivation. It wasn’t. It just speeded things up a bit.

And I was already falling for her.

Well hell. Now I really had to convince her that we should be together. If not, she was going to not only take my child with her, but also my heart.

I shook my head and gazed up at the stars. It was amazing to me that this place felt like being in the country, but it was right in middle of the fourth biggest city in the country.

Grandpa and Grandma had done well for themselves. Their lives were blessed in every way.

I could hope that my life would be a decent approximation of theirs. Not that anyone could ever do what they had done.

They were a perfect match.

I think that was why I had held out on getting married or even attached to anyone. I wanted what Grandpa Noah and Grandma Savannah had. I wanted the fairy tale life.

I kissed Zoe on the top of her head.

She was the beginning of that next step.

I had my pilot’s license and worked for Skye Travels. Work was set.

Now it was time to get my family going.

I felt such excitement in this moment. I felt like the whole world had just opened up for me. Zoe and I could do anything.

We would have beautiful children.
