Chapter 15

JAMIE DIDN’T WANT TO tell Alex what Officer Killian had said right away, but she did want to speak to Christine. After all, her sister was the one who was responsible for getting Markie back home to her. Jamie would forever be in her sister’s debt – without Christine, she might not have gotten Markie back at all.

Especially now that Jamie had spoken to her mother and her mother had been so weird about it. She had honestly not thought she had done anything wrong. What if she had never returned Markie?

Jamie didn’t want to think about it. She pushed the thought away and dialed Christine’s number. The caller tone rang through the Bluetooth hands-free system and Jamie waited patiently for her sister to answer.

When Markie had disappeared, Christine’s phone had continuously gone straight to voicemail, and it had been one more worry added to all the others. Erica, Christine, Markie, they had all disappeared together, and Jamie had expected the worst. At least now, Jamie was getting caller tone.

But the phone went on ringing, and Christine didn’t answer. Jamie frowned at the car radio where Christine’s name was displayed. A moment later, the call rolled over to voicemail, and Jamie let out a groan.

She waited for the electronic voice to tell her to leave a message and cleared her throat when she heard the beep.

“Hey, Christine, it’s me. Will you call me back when you get a chance? I know Alex handled things badly, but please give me another chance. We want Paul back at the company. I want to put all of this behind us.”

Jamie didn’t know what else to say. She could only hope Christine would phone her back sooner rather than later. She needed to talk to her sister and know that everything was okay. Especially after what Officer Killian had said– Christine had been the one that had helped them catch her mother and return Markie safely home.

But it wasn’t just that. She wanted to fix their relationship, and she wanted to talk to her about the accomplice. Maybe Christine knew something about that, too.

Even if Christine didn’t know anything, Jamie just wanted to talk to her sister. She wanted to hear her voice, wanted her to tell Jamie that everything was okay and that they could get through these difficult times together. It was Jamie’s child that had been taken, but it was Christine’s mother, too. Surely that it would affect Christine as it had affected Jamie.

Jamie drove home, deep in thought. She tried not to think too much about anything her mother had said. Everything she had done to Jamie and her family only made her angry. Instead, Jamie thought about Christine and how she had helped to bring Markie back to her. Things were still a little tense at home, and Jamie knew that Alex wasn’t happy about Jamie seeing her mother, but soon everything would go back to normal.

At least Jamie hoped they would. Since Officer Killian had told her
