A horizontal bit can be set by measurement if you have a device to gauge the elevation of the cutting edges adjacent to the bearing. Those form the panelâs tongue, which must be ¼" thick. If you are raising a "-thick panel, those edges must be " above the table. My shop-made setup gauge straddles the cutter, allowing me to measure the elevation.
Itâs best to use the fence to guide the cut whenever possible. You must position it tangent to the pilot bearing to get the cutterâs full profile. Hold a straightedge against the fence as you swing it into position. My ideal is to position the fence just clear of the bearing. Watch the bearing as you slide the straightedge. The straightedge should graze the bearing without turning it.
TEST-CUTS
To confirm your setup, make a test-cut (or two or more). You need to be sure, before you raise the actual panels, that the appearance is what you want and that the tongue will fit the groove. This final setup is the starting point for your cuts, regardless of how you approach the operation.
I prefer to raise panels in stages, making a shallow cut that removes about half the waste, followed by a second and final pass. The best way to manage this is by shifting the fence position.
With the typical horizontal bit (even one with an integral backcutter), you really only adjust the bit elevation at this test-cut stage. You have set the fence in relation to the pilot bearing. Presuming that you want to raise the panels with progressive cuts, you can shift the fence forward for that light first pass, then reset it tangent to the pilot bearing. This move wonât impact the featherboards. Theyâll ride along with the fence and apply the same downward pressure regardless of where on the tabletop you position the fence.
For your final test-cut, shift the fence and make a first pass on a sample of the working stock. Reset the fence against the bearing and make your second pass. Check the sample for appearance and for its fit in the frameâs panel groove. If necessary, raise or lower the bit and make another round of test-cuts.
When you have the setting nailed, recheck your featherboards. Take up your good stock, and raise some panels.
