This chart shows the differences between the four phases of inductive Bible study.

The Bible Study Toolbox

Dictionaries, Maps, Time Lines, Commentaries, and More!

Technically, all you need to do a Bible study is a Bible, prayer, and some time. However, it can be really helpful to have some other tools at your disposal, especially if you’re a beginner. This chapter is all about building your Bible study toolbox.

Study Bibles

Study Bibles have introductions, outlines, cross-references, and study notes.

The introductions to each Bible book can give you a ton of background information, answering some of the observation questions about timing, location, and context that might be hard to puzzle out on your own.

Introduction sections also include outlines, which give you a framework to understand the main events in each book. If you’re studying a short passage, the outline can help you put it in context.

Cross-references are lists of verses that relate to the passage you’re studying. They allow you to quickly see the connections between your passage and the rest of the Bible.

Study notes help explain historical context, difficult concepts, and fascinating facts about Bible passages. If you’re studying a tricky passage, the notes are the first place to look for help.
