The sky had begun to grow black, no reds of sunset, no oranges, no color at all, when the wagon halted at the prison. Once in the cell, Black Hair did not remove the shackles or chains as he had previously. He closed himself, and Dane, within its walls yet Dane found no time to ponder a reason. Black Hair fastened the chains to rings nested into the far stone wall.

“Now, Mortal,” growled the fanged Black Hair. “I have a promise to keep to myself.” He removed the leaf from Dane’s left arm and ran a finger up and down the length of the healing scar. The sensation tingled and raised the hairs on the back of Dane’s neck. He swallowed back the dread at what this creature would do next.

Dane attempted to jerk his arm free, but Black Hair tightened his grasp, encircling pain around his wrist and through Dane’s sensitive arm into his shoulder. All at once, the man’s mouth covered the raw wound, fangs piercing tender flesh, and Dane couldn’t help but cry out. As Black Hair sucked and slurped, a spasm of sick clenched Dane’s empty stomach. And finally he understood what gut wrenching fear meant. He was about to die.

Spots formed before his eyes and the room began to spin. He was vaguely aware of his knees hitting the straw. Like he'd drunk a half dozen bottles of the best wine, his mind began to float and his body grew light. Deep within the cavern of darkness that surrounded him, Dane knew he was going to die. He also knew he couldn’t go out without a fight.

Before he could drift into helpless unconsciousness, he made a fist with his free hand and swung, hoping the chains would be long enough for him to reach. His buffet landed a glancing blow to the side of Black Hair’s head, but as weak as it was, he released Dane and stumbled back. His composure returned within seconds and he advanced.

Dane expected the beast would kill him now. Instead, he unfastened the chains. Without the support, Dane dropped like an empty ragdoll to the fetid straw that had become his home. Black Hair replaced the leaf.

“Tell anyone of this, Human,” he growled, “and I shall see to it you die a most torturous death.” He wiped the blood from his mouth using his tunic sleeve, then he was gone. Dane’s wan strength dissolved and a deep black abyss fell upon him.

He was next awoken by a loud clank that forced his eyes open. What he saw didn't register at first, but as he blinked away the haze of blissful unconsciousness, he realized he was not dreaming. Meirah stood above him. The Mirror Lady. Dark auburn hair danced about slender shoulders, hung long, and through the haze of pain and disillusion, he knew she could only be an aberration. He sat up quickly and groaned at the deep ache that penetrated every muscle. Attempting to stand only produced a wave of dizziness that forced him back down.
