While diplomas were originally just a means to gain access to further education, schools now increasingly focus on the diploma as a goal. That is what the government wants, but is this also good for learning and development of the school-age children themselves? What is the value of such a degree?

On the labour market, children cannot do much with their school diplomas. Companies attach little value to the different diplomas of secondary education. Possession of a diploma is never the main reason to hire someone. Diplomas may say something about how well children have reproduced what they have been taught, but diplomas say very little about skills, knowledge, experience, motivation and social skills.
