Finally, establishing a partnership is essential to MI. This means that an alliance is built with the instructor and the student in which there is mutual trust and understanding. Without this partnership, the student will not view the instructor as a confidant and is much less likely to change their behavior. Instructors would be wise to remember that rapport building starts as soon as the student arrives and that great efforts should be made immediately for this process to be quick and efficient (for more on rapport building see later in this chapter).

After a solid understanding of the four foundational elements to MI, there are four key skills to understand and implement when moving forward with this technique: open questions; affirmations; reflections; and summaries (OARS skills). These skills are rooted in basic counseling techniques are great skills to have when working with people and facilitating a learning experience for them.
