This view, that too much reading can be harmful, that “cerebral hygiene” rather than reading can assist with creativity, intrigued me then. I learned years later that Merton and Comte were not the only ones who doubted the value of too much reading. Anthropologist Harry Wolcott (2001), too, saw himself as a writer, not a reader. Here is a story quoted from Wolcott, who talked about his own complicated relationship with reading. He asked whether we consider ourselves basically readers or writers, and identifies himself as a writer:
