“It wouldn’t hurt that Jewish swine to work a little harder!” This casual remark, made by an SS officer in Auschwitz, led to the death of Fritz Löhner-Beda. Never heard of Löhner-Beda? His name may not ring a bell, but in his day (1883–1942), the man was well-known in the world of German-language popular music and light classics.

He was a lyricist, but he also made a significant musical contribution to the creation of innumerable compositions. His list of works includes many hits, such as “Du schwarzer Zigeuner” (You black Gypsy), “Oh, Donna Clara,” “Ausgerechnet Bananen” (Of all things bananas, an adaptation of “Yes! We Have No Bananas,” once sung by Josephine Baker), “Gern hab’ ich die Frau’n geküsst” (I like to kiss the women), “Ich hab’ mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren” (I lost my heart in Heidelberg), “Dein ist mein ganzes Herz” (My whole heart is yours, immortalized by tenor Richard Tauber), “Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß” (My lips, they kiss so hot), and “Freunde, das Leben ist lebenswert” (Friends, life is worth living).
