The noon sun broiled from straight above. It was one of those rare sunny days in Seattle, and the rest of the potentials couldn’t shut up about how amazing it felt not to have the chilly drizzle. I, on the other hand, felt like I was being slowly roasted alive even though the temperature had dropped to the mid-thirties.
I had spent the morning as I had spent the last few: throwing up everything I had eaten the night before. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t anything down. For the first time since we had started the Trials, Maya had tried to maintain distance from me. Something about how I might give her the plague.
Shivering in the breeze, I followed a werewolf to a clearing in a copse of woods in a park in the middle of the city, along with the rest of the potentials. A busted down RV trailer had been tipped on its side. All of the wheels were missing. I supposed it might have been white once upon a time. Now caked in mud and left to rust, the salt-water air and constant Seattle drizzle had left it yellowed and rusted out on the edges near the undercarriage.
“All right,” the shifter said. There was a gleam in her eyes that I did not like. “Get ‘er home, boys and girls.”
“Home?” Michael, one of the potentials scoffed.
“Weiss Tower.”
“We must be fifteen miles away from Weiss Tower!” Maya said.
“I’m feeling generous,” the werewolf said. “You only need to get it to the parking garage and not down into the basement.”
“Yes, how generous,” I muttered.
The werewolf flashed me a smile and then turned. A few of the potentials started at the sudden shift. The werewolf’s clothing tore away as her bones snapped and rearranged themselves. It wasn’t often that one of them shifted in front of us. With how expensive it must have been to replace all the torn clothing each time someone shifted, I could see why. The slight gray wolf bounded away. We could hear her howl off in the distance. It sounded strangely like a laugh.
The exposed undercarriage of the trailer had seen better days. Constant salt-water had eroded the shocks, and frankly even if we were to have the keys, wheels, and the whole thing turned back upright, I doubted it would even start.
“Could be worse,” Michael said, turning to the rest of us. “They could have taken us to Bainbridge Island. Can you imagine getting this thing on the ferry?”
“Thank God for small favors,” Maya said. She looked around. “I guess we need to search the woods to see what we might come up with to help us move this thing.”
I tried to focus on what the group was talking about, but the sun was killing me. Everything was so bright. One by one people had started to spread out in search of any tools we could use on the trailer. I swayed on my feet.
“Too bad I don’t have a feather on me, Ward,” Caleb said.
