106 Barrett (1978: 457) agrees that treating the sentence as a statement “does not seem to make good sense” but construes “and if it had not been so I would have told you” as a parenthesis in a sentence that otherwise reads, “There will be many abiding-places, for I am going to prepare a place for you” (see also Morris 1995: 568). But it is hard to see how this makes any better sense than the option Barrett rejects.
