The distance from the gate to the front door is only about fifty metres. But the journey crosses continents and spans cultures.

Robert opened the gate and a veil was removed. We stood at the top of a gently curving staircase: wide, concrete steps, swept clean but for a foraging patrol of small black ants crossing in single file from one side to the other. The curve conceals the bottom of the staircase. A discovery-in-waiting.

Water trickles from a wooden spout and drips onto a large stone.

“This is a combination of Bavaria and Kyoto. We lived in Bavaria for a year in an eighteenth-century farmhouse, and they had something like this, water spouting from a spring into a cattle trough. The carving is Bavarian in style, but the stone and the soft sound of water is reminiscent of what you might find in the garden of a Kyoto temple. This morning, when I got up to check things out, there was a little flock of siskins drinking there.”

Below the water spout, descending as the steps descend, is a native garden of rock, moss, and familiar west coast plants such as shore pine, salal, ferns, Oregon oxalis, and kinnikinnick—an outcrop just as nature made it. Or so it appears.

“I don’t want you to see too much.”
