A GENEALOGY OF THE BEAUTIFUL FIGHTING GIRL

103

This work, which falls into the splash of crimson subgenre, also has great significance in the history of the beautiful fighting girl. The many complex female soldiers who surround Amuro Rei (Mathilda, Sayla, Lalah, etc.) all play important roles. Moreover, the configuration of the love-hate relationship between the hero and the fighting heroine also became a special characteristic of this subgenre that was passed down for a long time.

I have to place particular emphasis on Tomino’s obsession with sexuality. The scenes of the heroine in the bath were popular among fans, and it is rumored that this inspired Cream Lemon (Kuriimu remon) and other adult anime. This emphasis on the sexuality of an anime heroine remains one of the major contributions of Gundam.

Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, must be remembered as practically the first major science fiction action film to feature a fighting heroine. There were foretastes of this in other works, including Princess Leia of Star Wars, but Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was the first example of a heroine who combined toughness and sweetness in a major work. Of course, in the sequel, Alien 2, the maternal was emphasized over the sweet.

The television anime The Rose of Versailles also began in 1979. As one would imagine from the fact that this was also put on as a play by the Takarazuka, this work belongs to the Takarazuka lineage, which ran continuously from Princess Knight. This tale, which takes the French Revolution as its backdrop, centers on Oscar, a pretty girl in boy’s clothing who was born into the house of General Jarjayes.

It is well known that at the time of its release the feature-length anime Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostoro (Rupan Sansei: Kariosutoro no shiro) drew very small audiences. The work became extremely popular later when it went to video, and there are some who declare this Miyazaki’s best work. There are many examples of works that became legendary when released on video, as was the case for the movie Blade Runner; this also illuminates the “after-the-fact” nature of otaku culture. Although there are no beautiful fighting girls in Lupin III, it is possible to see the formation of a personality that was carried down years later into Nausicaa in the central figure, twenty-year-old Princess Clarice. A fragment of the aggression that the pure, gentle Clarice unwittingly displays can be seen in the car chase near the beginning.
