CHAPTER 15

For over a month, Vicki hid out at the Holiday Inn. She ordered up meals from room service, watched television, and spent hours talking on the phone. Every now and then she'd brave the world and go for a ride in the Maserati. She knew it was a matter of time before Bernie would discover her whereabouts and demand she return his car. Alfred, meanwhile, was taking a hard line when it came to giving her money. Until she agreed to drop the lawsuit, she could forget about getting another Mercedes from him or, for that matter, receiving anything but a subsistence income. Instead, she would be living her life on a designer shoestring—the cloistered damsel of the Holiday Inn. He would keep her there until she understood what she could and couldn't do in the life she had chosen. He would teach her that it wasn't wise to get too uppity in this world, and that there were better ways to resolve their differences than hashing them out in court. He made all of this quite clear to her each day when he called to keep tabs on her, to see how she was making out.

Vicki had apologized, had claimed she was sorry for letting it all get out of hand. But... he never should have dared her and, what's more, she would no longer be part of his sado-masochistic encounters. She would no longer mingle with his legion of hookers or in any way sanction his sexual proclivities. If they were to have sex, it would take place in an intimate setting, with just the two of them present.

Otherwise, they could be only friends. Although Alfred, till the end of his days, would continue with his bizarre sex practices, Vicki was never again a part of it.

But before the issue was settled, an irate Bernie Cornfeld showed up at the Holiday Inn to confront Vicki Morgan and take back his Maserati. Vicki bought time by asking Bernie to wait in the lobby until she was dressed. When he agreed, she immediately called Alfred and asked what she should do.

"Don't worry about Bernie," Alfred assured her. "He won't give you any trouble, not if you tell him you've come back to me."

She was trapped again, caught in a squeeze play with only one move to make if she was to save herself at all. God help her if she went against Alfred and went along with Bernie, especially at a time like this when the two massive egos were at the flashpoint. For this was a struggle far more severe than two men competing for a woman. This was a classical rivalry between Alfred, the old moneyed socialite, and Bernie, a product of the nouveau riche. Jealousy, animosity, and the taste of dried blood from previous disagreements were all at work here. Winning Vicki's hand was more than the taking of flesh. In a struggle of this magnitude, hers was the hand of gold.

Vicki would soon drop the lawsuit and return to the dominion of Alfred Bloomingdale.
