‘Can we do nothing to stop her?’ asked Pandora.

‘Many have tried,’ answered the king. ‘But the Sea-Witch is as clever as she is wicked. Any merbear that dares to approach her castle is caught in the enchanted reeds that surround it.’

Pandora thought for a moment. ‘I could try,’ she said. ‘I am not a merbear, so perhaps the spell will not work on me.’

‘And I will come with you,’ said Anemone, ‘to keep watch for the witch.

Nothing that the King of the Merbears could say would dissuade them and together the two friends set out, carrying a mirror between them. After a long and tiring journey, they finally reached the enchanted reeds.

All of a sudden, Pandora heard a cry. Anemone had tried to follow, but the enchanted reeds had wrapped themselves tightly around her. Quickly Pandora swam back and pulled her free. But poor Anemone was exhausted from her struggle and could not go on. So Pandora left her to keep watch and began to climb the steps to the witch’s castle.

She had not gone far when she heard the Sea-Witch’s terrible laugh. ‘Got you at last, my princess!’

Pandora turned to see the Sea-Witch bending over poor Anemone. She hid the mirror behind her back. ‘Over here smelly old Sea-Witch!’ she called, ‘Come and get me!’

The Sea-Witch turned and started to climb towards her with an evil gleam in her eye. She had almost reached her when Pandora held up the mirror. The Sea-Witch screamed as she saw her own reflection. Then, before their eyes, she turned into a pillar of stone.
