CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

A glint entered Ivy’s eye and she perked up suddenly. “So where did you go last night, Meg?” Ivy asked, peering at her. “Were you with...a friend?”

The sudden change in Ivy’s demeanor took Meg by surprise. She stared at the older woman for a moment, not quite sure what to make of her.

“Who were you with last night, Meg?” Ivy persisted.

Meg frowned. The question felt intrusive, and she really wanted to tell Ivy that it wasn’t any of her business.

But she had just promised Ivy that she would be a good neighbor and friend to her.

She didn’t want to hurt Ivy’s feelings, and she didn’t want Ivy to feel that she really had no one. Friends talked to one another, so there should be no harm letting Ivy know a little more about her.

“I was with a friend,” Meg said and she couldn’t help the smile on her face. Just thinking of Shane made her happy.

“A special friend,” Ivy said knowingly.

“He is special,” Meg admitted. “Very special.”

Ivy looked at her and Meg thought that she saw a malicious, predatory gleam in Ivy’s pitch black eyes, But she dismissed that ridiculous thought.

“You shouldn’t trust a man so easily,” Ivy said slowly.

Meg narrowed her eyes. “Why would you say that?”

“You’ve been hurt by a man before. He hurt you real bad, didn’t he?” Ivy said.

Meg froze. “That...that was in the past,” she stuttered. How did Ivy know about her past? She was pretty sure that she hadn’t mentioned anything about her past to Ivy.

“They’re all the same,” Ivy went on. “These predators can sniff out wounded prey. They can smell the blood that is dripping from your old wounds. And they know that you are easy prey. They are all predators.”

Predators.

The word seemed to echo round and round in her head.

Meg forced air into her lungs as she felt her chest and throat constrict painfully.

Gordon was a wolf shifter.

And Shane...was a bear shifter.

Wolves and bears were deadly predators.

“I have your best interests at heart, Meg,” Ivy said, leaning forward. “I’m only looking out for you, as a good neighbor and friend. I see the danger you’re in, and I feel that I should warn you. Otherwise, you might be devoured and destroyed.”

Meg made a strangled sound. “What are you talking about, Ivy? You don’t know...”

“But I do know. You’re weak and wounded,” Ivy said. “Predators can smell wounded prey. I bet your very special friend picked up the scent of blood and pounced on you. How long have you known him, Meg?”

“N-not very long.” The words escaped on a shuddering breath.

“You’ll see that I’m right. I’m right about everything. Listen to me, Meg. I’m warning you out of the goodness of my heart. Be careful and don’t trust these predators.”

After a pause, Ivy said very slowly and deliberately, “I know exactly how these predators operate. And I know how wounded and broken you are, Meg.”

Meg shook her head. She didn’t want to believe Ivy, but everything Ivy said so far made sense.
