Malvin called every regional Clan Chief, pulling them away from their local duties to meet him at the capital in a day’s time. He regretted, finally, the strict adherence to tradition that kept his people living in agricultural communities most of the world would consider low tech. A small country, they didn’t have a national airport. Their rail system was underdeveloped and they rarely imported vehicles. People died in the same farm towns they’d been born and raised in. He understood one of Boudicca’s desires- to drag them kicking and screaming into the twenty first century. Or at least, the non-Talogren view of the twenty first century. Which seemed to include using violence and coercion to get one’s way.

His fear for Ash nearly overrode the niggling bit of unease in his belly. He’d brought Newyn, and all his personal warriors with him in a last minute decision. They weren’t many- it’d been awhile since a Clan Chief had had the funds to maintain a full household. He’d need every male he could get in order to find and rescue his daughter. But he couldn’t help feeling-

“We left Izobelle unprotected,” he said to Newyn, voice rough.

He stared out of the window, occasionally checking the dash to make sure that, yes, Newyn was driving as fast as possible. The two lane highway leading towards Talogroth was cut through the great mountain passes, miles of forest on either side and little in the way of civilization the closer they drove to his country. A roadside inn here and there, a small hamlet with a fuel stop and camping supply store.

“Hardly,” Newyn said. “She did well enough before ya.”

“That was before Boudicca.”

“I can send Lyle and Joshua back.”

Damn. Didn’t know what to expect ahead, feared for what he’d left behind.

“I’d feel better if I knew what Boudicca’s final aim was.”

“Other than killin’ ya or at the least convincing the regional Chiefs to unSeat you?”

Their father never should have allowed her to be raised by her mother, away from the Clan. That female’s only aim ever had been to cause Da as much trouble as possible, revenge for throwing her over when he met his mate. As if a male could ignore the call of a mate. And Da’s call had been the lightning quick kind.

“This might be my fault,” Malvin said, reluctantly.

Newyn glanced at him, brow raised. “What?”

“The war, and then after- I ignored her. I let the bad blood between our mothers fester. Maybe she feels like she has no choice but to do it this way.”

His friend shook his head. “Don’t go gettin’ soft on that female. There were a dozen different ways she could have gotten her aims across- and remember her main clamor was always to avenge her Ma. Modernizing Talogroth is a smelly blanket she hides under.”

They drove around a bend of mountain, passing a rest stop that was little more than a patch of dirt big enough for a few cars to park.

Malvin’s jaw ticked. “If she’s hurt my Ash, it’ll be easy enough to hate her.
