Food Storage in Backcountry Areas with Trees

Suspending Food Bag between Two Trees

Material needed:

• About 100 feet of ⅛-inch or larger nylon rope

• Weight at end of rope to help throw it over tree limbs

• Ability to attach food sack to rope (a carabiner is handy)

1. Pick two trees about 23 feet apart. Throw the weighted end of the line (or climb up and place the weighted end of the line) over a limb about 17 feet up.

2. Tie off the line on the first tree. Throw the weighted end of the line over the limb of the second tree.

3. Attach the food bag near what will be the middle of the line between the two trees.

4. Secure the other end of the line to the second tree and check to see that the food is about twelve feet above the ground.
