Prevention at Home Using a Clicker

The first step in teaching no barking is to teach your Beagle to be Quiet. The “Quiet” command is a good way to prevent barking when you are at home. The minute he starts to bark, tell him “Quiet.” Place a treat before his nose. When he goes quiet to sniff it, click your clicker and offer him the treat as a reward. Repeat and reward him for every few seconds that he is quiet. He will learn that being quiet means treats. Be sure to reward him whenever he is quiet in the future after some sort of trigger presents itself. He will soon learn to obey “Quiet” and to stay quiet. And eventually the habit to be quiet will take precedence over barking.

If he refuses to listen to your ‘Quiet’ command, you need to take some proactive action to stop him from barking. Try blocking the stimulus that is upsetting him. Also use the time-out approach to take him out of the stimulus for a while and teach him that barking equals being tied up alone where he cannot observe and explore everything that is going on.
