Emily

Emily was secretly super happy with the way the risotto had turned out; it was rich yet fresh. Must have been the addition of crème fraîche and chives. She felt a little fuzzy, surreal. She’d never thought she’d have a moment like she and Robbie had just experienced. A declaration after barely a week? That was movie-level stuff.

Jack’s fart had cut right through their sexual tension—thanks, buddy—but it was nice to just be with Robbie. To begin with, he’d anticipated her freaking needs with the oat milk. She was pretty sure all you needed to do was strain oats and add a bit of salt to make the stuff, but that didn’t stop it being potentially the most romantic gesture she’d ever been on the receiving end of.

Her nerves were heightened, sure, but she didn’t feel like she had to front or pretend to be someone she wasn’t. That was refreshing. A bit startling, though, was how in her body he made her feel. She was an average hugger and had never considered herself a particularly physical person, but looking at him, she wanted to trace his arms, put her hand on the soft skin of his torso. He was wearing a pale-green short-sleeved shirt, which was open, showing a white singlet underneath. His biceps pressed against the sleeves, and she could see the shape of his pecs through the white cotton.

She decided to break her reverie with small talk. “So, what’s next for you?” She kept her tone light, although she did really want to know.

“I’m not sure, honestly,” he replied. “A mate has offered me a short gig in Sydney, so there’s that.” Sydney? The other side of the world? “But I don’t think anyone can really make plans right now. I think we’re all in a one-day-at-a-time position.”

“True.”

“What about you? What are your plans?”

“Oh, I’m very much in one-day-at-a-time mode. I hate my job, sure, but I have a job. You’re right; it’s hard to plan or even imagine right now.”

“Yeah, my mum really wants me to come back to Sydney, but I, obviously, have a renewed interest in London.” He smiled, and her centre felt fuzzy hot with delight at even the faint acknowledgment that she was part of his plans.

“What about your dad, what does he think you should do?” she asked, not really sure why.

“Oh, I wouldn’t have the faintest. He’s not much of an expresser. He’s a she’ll-be-right-mate, bottle-every-emotion type. Truly, I think he’s more embarrassed about my business and the media coverage than I am.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, he hates failure. It’s like he’s allergic to it.”

“That must be hard for you.”

“It is, but it isn’t, you know? I now see my parents as humans. Flawed humans. Their feelings toward me are only them projecting their own insecurities. I think once I sort of twigged that, my relationship with my dad got easier. I’ll never truly please him because he’ll never be happy with himself, so why try? I’ll just ignore the old bastard when he’s grumpy and enjoy a beer with him when he’s not.
