Ted watched Emily as she rushed away. A sinking feeling in the pit of his gut came as a dire warning. Emily desperately wanted to talk to her mother. Probably enough to ignore his warning and put them in danger. Again. Yet, he could understand her hesitation to believe her own uncle was behind the theft and attempted kidnapping. And maybe murder. She may have her head in the clouds, but at least he could understand why.

It was the murder of the accountant that bothered him the most. Since Jake had filled him in on so many other details, he’d finally just let him tell the whole story. Now he knew exactly why the feds wanted her safe. She had to go to trial, because unless they could get an insider to snitch…they’d never pull enough evidence for conviction. The murderer might never even go to trial.

As Ted strode through the house, he tried to make note of all the places he could put trail cameras. He’d checked Emily’s room after the break-in but hadn’t found anything. There was a possibility the attackers had known their every move by guess, but more likely they’d managed somehow to plant a listening device in his home. If he had something that belonged to the person who planted it, he could probably get Captain to sniff out the device. Though, he hadn’t been used in that capacity since he’d started training.

He heard Emily talking to herself as she walked through the house. Little snippets of her voice floated to him while he shaved. Everything he’d asked of her, she’d done so far. Even the strange things like talking outside and chatting with herself as she walked through the house. She wasn’t just lying down and letting him handle the security, she wanted to take part. He loved that she met every challenge with fervor, even the situations that scared her.

Emily waited for him in the living room. She wore the same jeans she’d worn the day she arrived and a pink fitted tee that would probably really set off her blond hair, but made the brown look rich, like chocolate. For a change, she wore it down, and he held back the compliment he wanted to give her. He’d probably done enough of that today. Without a word, he nodded and led her to the door. He pointed to Captain’s bed, near the sofa. The dog sat and held his head high like a sentinel. Ted had no doubt the dog would be there when they returned.

Once she climbed into the truck and he got settled in, he breathed a sigh. If his theory was right, they would be able to be gone all afternoon because her attackers would be in the dark about where they were. All the trouble would be worth it if they got one afternoon of peace.

Emily faced out the window, away from him. She’d been preoccupied all day, ever since they’d talked about getting her a phone.

“I appreciate that we’ve been able to work together today.
