Your first task is to locate a known gold district. There are plenty of books available to help you research likely regions where gold miners once worked or are continuing to work. One classic research book is the Gold Diggers Atlas by Robert Neil Johnson (Gem Guide Books, 11th ed.) It has general maps for known gold districts, and it will tell you if there are any good places near you. It lacks detail, the roads aren’t updated, and it has very little information about private property, so it’s just a starting point. You can also do a general web search, such as “gold districts <state name>,” and see what pops up.
