Another method is to lay the first row or two of background tiles to curve around the central design; the rest of the background tiles are then laid in an even grid. This technique is known as opus tessellatum.

Both this variation of the pineapple design and the starfish bowl feature the opus tessellatum technique.

The tiles on the candle platter curve around the edge of the plate, radiating out from the central subject. This is called opus vermiculatum.

Another popular way to lay tiles is to make a “crazy quilt” of irregularly shaped pieces. Sometimes those pieces are mostly triangles and rectangles, which add a bit of order to a random pattern. The Romans called this technique opus palladianum. Mosaic artists use this method to fill in oddly shaped areas and provide a sense of movement to a design.
