The Mean Square Within

The mean square within (MSW) quantifies the variability of data points in a group around its mean. This is the estimate of the variance within groups.e Figure 13.8 depicts this graphically.

The formula for the mean square within is:

where SSW is the sum of squares within groups and dfW is the degrees of freedom within groups. The sum of squares within is and degrees of freedom within is dfW = N − k.
