Chapter Six: Brown Paper Bag

How many of you have been in a parking lot and saw a penny lying on the ground but did not pick it up? What about those of you who may have seen a brown paper bag slightly crumbled up and tucked away alongside a walkway and did not give a second thought about what contents may be inside? Thinking about it, most if not all of us at one point in time have found ourselves in these types of situations and reacted with an unconscious nature. So when it comes to understanding your value and others around you comprehending what your values are, what do you think the natural reaction is?

These illustrations illuminate how 99.9% of all human beings think or react to situations in their lives. Their reactions are not necessarily wrong by nature per say, but they are restrictive by purpose. If you happen to come across a penny on the ground, chances are you would not pick it up because of your understanding of its value. After all how is one cent going to contribute to your life? Likewise, if you spot a crumpled brown paper bag laying on the side of a walk way, you may not go out of your way to retrieve it because you don’t know what’s in it, if anything at all. I mean realistically speaking, what value does a brown paper bag serve in your life? If you find yourself nodding your head up and down in agreement with what I’ve said thus far, think about this for a moment. You are passing someone in a hallway, either at work or in school. Your demeanor insinuates that you are not having the best of days and your only purpose is to find the strength to make it through the rest of the day in hopes that the next day brings about a more positive outlook. As you’re walking, face droopy and shoulders slumped, feet barely elevating to the proper height requirement to keep you from stumbling over, you hear someone speak out “Hey there, how’s it going?” Feeling a little apprehensive to respond, you muster up enough positive emotion to reply “Just trying to make it. I guess things would be better if…” Before you can conclude your thought, the same person whom you thought had a vested interest in your life has revealed their true feeling about your value by interrupting “Oh ok well take care now!” as they walk off to join another social conversation. Any person including you and I would find a response like that just plain wrong and somewhat disrespectful. But why would we think that? Couldn’t we argue that our reaction to that situation was merely a reaction to an ignorance of our value? I feel like I’m about to lose you, so let me help you out here.

In order to understand your value, you first have to understand what value is in correlation to your worth and what worth is in respect to value.
