A couple of hours, and still no zombie horde later, the mood in the car was becoming despondent.
âI mean, there are still zombies out there, right?â Joe asked, drumming his fingers on the wheel impatiently. âBecause Iâm starting to wonder if this whole thing ended, and we just never got the memo.â
âTheyâre definitely still out there,â Violet insisted. âWe were almost killed by them yesterday.â She and the guys had already gone back to the depot, but there were no biters inside. But at least it meant the group could come back for another bus in a few days.
âWe need to think of a place people would go to feel safe,â Matt began. âThose are always the ones that end up getting overrun.â
âA church?â Violet suggested.
âPossible. Are there many around here?â
âYeah,â Joe replied. âBut I donât think weâll find any biters there. Ezra had us raiding the places for communion wine and anything else worth stealing. His soldiers came with us and killed any biters we found.â
âWhen was this?â Violet asked. She had no memory of that whatsoever.
âNot long after we arrived.â
âOh.â
âYou didnât go too?â Matt asked.
âNo.â
âWhy?â
âI wasnât ready.â
Joe cleared his throat. âIt wasnât long after youâ¦you knowâ¦died.â
âI didnât do much for the first few weeks,â Violet said, her voice low.
âIâm sorry.â Matt reached back, squeezing her hand.
âGuys, please donât forget Iâm still in the car,â Joe said.
Matt smiled, squeezing her hand once more and then let go. âI was meaning to ask; how did you join up with Ezra anyway?â
âWe were in a house,â Joe began. âNot our cottage. After what happened at the warehouse we couldnât go back home. We drove for hours and found some place in the middle of nowhere. We stayed there for a while.â
Violet shuddered. She couldnât remember much from back then. She had been living in a state of semi-consciousness, feeling more like a zombie than she ever had before or since.
Joe continued. âAfter about a week, Jack and Lex and a couple of others arrived. Theyâd come to see if the house had supplies, they didnât know we were there. They invited us to Harmony, and we said yes. It wasnât like weâd been doing so great on our own anyway, and they said their community was safe.â He snorted, then his eyes widened. âI know where we need to go.â
âWhat?â
âFor the biters, I know where weâll find them.â
âWhere?â
âWhereâs everyoneâs favourite place to run during the zompocalypse?â
