Kelly

Kelly surveyed the café and couldn’t help smiling.

Every table was occupied. Customers were eating, drinking and browsing the bookshelves. Quiet conversations gave the place a friendly backdrop but didn’t overpower the peaceful vibe Kelly cultivated.

In part, she credited the bookshelves for creating a library-like atmosphere.

But she couldn’t help wondering if maybe the yoga students were actually ideal guests. As it turned out, their study of calm alertness seemed to be in keeping with her book and bakeshop mentality.

Looking around at the familiar faces, she knew for sure that some of these women had frequented Mornings at McDermott’s before Yoga Valhalla ended their passion for comfort food. She definitely remembered this place being louder back then.

The thought of the yoga studio had her looking for the sign across the street.

But from her angle, the chalkboard was gone.

She glanced at the stairwell, but Bane was probably getting Ollie ready for school.

She pulled herself off her stool and hopped to the front door of the café, ignoring the worried glances of her customers.

When she got out to the sidewalk, she could see that she had been right, the chalkboard was gone.

A handwritten sign was now taped to the front door.

Her heart dropped to her stomach and she felt a cold sweat forming at her brow.

“Kelly, what are you doing out here?” Bane’s voice was furious.

“The chalkboard’s gone,” she said. “And that note…”

“Yeah, it looks like she’s remodeling after all,” Bane said. But he sounded just the slightest bit uncertain. “Anyway, the sign clearly says she’s closed on purpose.”

“It doesn’t matter what the sign says,” Kelly told him slowly. “Look at the handwriting.”

Together they studied the hasty scrawl on the paper.

“First of all, I think you’re aware of Whitney’s beautiful handwriting,” Kelly said. “She would never leave a sign like that posted.”

“Hm,” Bane said, nodding.

“Secondly, look at that piece of paper,” Kelly said. “It’s smudged with grime in the corner, see? She would never, ever leave this note on that piece of paper. Something is wrong, Bane.”

She watched him carefully.

He frowned, his eyes scanning the sign again - a grimy, sloppy note taped to the pristine glass of the studio.

“You’re right,” he said at last. “Whitney didn’t leave that note.”

“So what do we do?” Kelly asked him.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “But Ollie’s in there talking Minna Randolf’s ear off, and I need to feed him before Ainsley and little Michael come to pick him up. Then we can think about this.”

“Oh my gosh, Ollie,” Kelly said, feeling terrible that Bane had left him in the café while he came out to retrieve her.

“Don’t worry about him,” Bane said with a smile. “He’s got a whole fan club in there.”

She allowed Bane to help her back inside.

The sounds and smells of the busy café welcomed her back, and for a moment she really allowed herself to take it all in and enjoy it.

If only people could enjoy yoga and breakfast. It seemed to Kelly that the morning should be big enough for both things.

“Kelly,” Ollie yelled and scrambled over to hug her.
