However, its frugal use of premade bread and easily kept preserves led to its meteoric resurgence during the wartime years. Though frugal it may be, it is a warm bowl of absolute patriotic triumph. I have included it in this book, as the “dessert pud” is fairly unknown in the United States. And I believe that the creamy and soft mingling of custard, bright raspberry, and airy meringue might work to turn the attention more to this humble dessert.
