SEVENTEEN

Carson

The sound of the air conditioner chugging away in one of the two windows in the apartment was the first thing I was aware of, followed by the sunlight streaming in.

The sun was up. That meant I needed to get up as well. It was the last thing I wanted to do.

After holding myself in check since meeting Kayleigh, I’d finally given in. Finally let myself go with her. And the result was both not good and at the same time absolutely incredible.

Not good because I could see she worked too hard and slept too little but I’d kept her up half the night anyway.

Anyone could see she was on the edge of exhaustion. But that didn’t seem to keep me from loving her until well past midnight. And then waking her up to do it all over again just before dawn, because yeah, being with her was freaking amazing.

Feeling selfish, but still pretty damn good about things, I rolled over and glanced at the clock.

Just that motion woke her next to me in the narrow bed. She groaned. “What time is it?”

“Early. Seven. Go back to sleep,” I said as I traced the inked floral design on her arm with one fingertip.

“Good idea, since somebody kept me up half the night.” She reached for me, tugging me closer and at that moment I wanted nothing more than to stay.

She sounded soft and sleepy and the last thing I wanted to do was leave, but I was going to have to. “I have to go. I need to get home, change into my uniform and get to the department. You should try to get some more sleep before work.”

“I’ll be fine.”

I leaned in and kissed her, but only briefly. “I know you’ll be fine. But try to sleep some more anyway.”

“Yes, sir.”

A smile twitched my lips. Wide awake Kayleigh was never this compliant. I found I liked sleepy Kayleigh. Hell, who was I kidding. I liked all sides of Kayleigh.

Even the secretive side?

I pushed that errant thought away. It was bad enough I had to leave her bed when all I wanted to do was snuggle under the covers with her in the cool room for another hour or two. Then try to work up a sweat again between the sheets like we had last night.

But it was not to be. I had work today. But I didn’t tomorrow. That helped preserve my good mood even as I stood and reached for the clothes scattered around the floor.

Pulling on my shirt, I glanced at her looking too tempting in the bed. “I had a good time.”

“That’s an understatement, but me too.” She smiled sleepily.

“I’ll stop by the bar on my lunch break later,” I promised.

“I’ll be there,” she said, and I realized it was hard to remember what it was like before she was here in town. And in my life.

I resisted the urge to tell her I’d also be coming by after my shift. And hoping to do something together tonight.
