Bubba

I called another Bend Crew meeting. I wanted to fill them in on our plans, and let them know that Kevin wasn’t going to be around for a while. I knew a lot of people were going to be shocked. Kevin was the backbone of this operation, but we couldn’t stop working because he needed to find himself. They didn’t stop working while I was grieving, and we wouldn’t stop working now. Nothing stops the money train. Makayla and I had a few ideas for the direction we wanted to go, but nothing was definite.

I pulled up to the meeting house. It looked as if everyone was there, on time, as usual. Makayla drove her own car to the meeting so that it wouldn’t look suspicious. I didn’t want people to get the wrong idea about her staying with me. I already had enough people breathing down my back about it, and I didn’t need any more. I walked inside, and everyone waved at me as I walked to the front.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” I said.

“Good afternoon,” they replied.

“As y’all know, I said that we would be making some changes. You are still to wear your gun on you at all times, just in case something pops off. But as y’all know, we will also be opening up an actual storefront and selling our shirts there exclusively. We are going to launch five new t-shirt designs and a sneaker. All of you will get a pair of sneakers and all of the shirts. You can wear the new merch to the opening. We will all work in shifts at the store and security at the warehouse. Do you follow me so far?” I asked, and they nodded.

“Kevin is on leave right now. With everything that has happened over the past couple of weeks, he just needs time to find himself, and we have to respect his wishes.”

“Will he be coming back?” asked Jonathan, one of our older members.

“Yeah, I think he’ll be back,” I said.

“I don’t think things will be the same without Kevin. Shit, when you left, all hell broke loose,” said Miranda, one of the girls who worked in the warehouse.

“Yes, I know, but we will be taking extra precaution to make sure that everything is running smoothly. I think we are good right now, but you should never sleep out there on the streets. Ever!” I said.

They all nodded.

“Hey, uh, whatever happened to Yolanda?” asked Jonathan.

I was quiet for a moment because I wasn’t exactly sure what to say.

“She is doing fine. I know that she is out of the hospital, but she hasn’t answered any of mine or Makayla’s calls. She just wants to be left alone, I guess.”

“I would too. That shit was crazy! She looked like she had been through hell and back,” said Miranda.

“She was. No woman should ever have to endure the torture that she suffered. She was innocent. She just got caught up in a fucked up situation. I’m going to make sure that it never happens again.
