Philip couldn’t believe the time. It was eleven o’clock and he was still there. He’d been on the point of leaving two or three times throughout the evening, but each time the thought crossed his mind, he found himself growing increasingly reluctant to bid farewell to Seb and his beautiful dog. Outside the wind howled and the rain hit the windows in a steady rhythm.
They’d spent the late afternoon sitting in front of the fire, him at one end of the sofa, Seb at the other. Philip had chosen a book from Seb’s extensive collection and had settled back into the cushions to read it. Honey had sat in front of him, her head resting on his knee, and he’d stroked her absently as a feeling of contentment spread throughout his body. A comfortable silence had ensued.
You know this all has to come to an end, don’t you?
Right now Philip didn’t want to think about that. He’d never known such an atmosphere of peace. It pervaded the entire house. When Seb had suggested him staying for dinner, Philip found himself accepting without hesitation. The meal had been simple, a couple of steaks with baked potatoes, peas and mushrooms, but Philip couldn’t remember the last time he’d enjoyed food so much. These last two months, eating had become a matter of refueling, nothing more—certainly not something to be enjoyed. Seb hadn’t pressed him to talk, but had shared stories about his job as a book reviewer. Philip liked him. He liked the way Seb’s eyes were so alive. He liked the way he used his hands when he was talking. And he loved it when Seb talked about Caleb. There was so much love in his voice. Philip wished he’d known him. The way Seb talked about him conjured up an image of a warm, caring man who lived life to the full.
“Please don’t think this is weird, but… ”
Philip glanced up at Seb who was curled up in the opposite corner of the sofa, his hand resting on the page of his open book. “But…?” Philip repeated, eyebrows arched.
“It’s late, and I don’t like the idea of you driving across the island in this awful weather. I have a spare room and the bed is made up. Why don’t you stay the night?” Seb was gazing at him intently, almost imploringly.
Philip was stunned. The thought of having to go out into the cold, wet night was not a pleasant one, but he’d never expected such a generous offer. “Are…are you sure? I mean, I don’t have anything with me.”
Seb smiled. “I have a new toothbrush in the bathroom cabinet, there are plenty of towels and I even have a robe you can wear if you want to nip to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The only things I can’t offer you are pajamas. I don’t possess a single pair, I’m afraid.” He gave Philip an apologetic look.
Philip considered the proposal. At that moment the rain hit the window with renewed vigor.
