I’m not sure where Elisa and I stand after what transpired last night. I left her in bed, letting her sleep a few extra minutes while I showered and dressed for work.

But by the time I stepped out of the shower, towel wrapped around my waist, she was gone.

Was it too much to hope that she might have snuck into the shower and told me goodbye?

It’s wishful thinking and a bit insane, since I don’t want a girlfriend. I’m not sure what I even want with Elisa.

Don’t get me wrong, last night was amazing. I would love another replay without the massive amount of wine to get us into the mood. My head is a bit foggy with a dull ache. Nothing that a couple of aspirin can’t cure.

There’s a loud thud from across the hall and I race out of the bedroom to see what the hell happened.

Elisa is nowhere in sight.

Tyler’s screams of pain radiate through the house, growing louder and more pronounced.

“Fuck.” I hurry to the bedroom. He’s on the floor. I don’t know how he got down there. He can’t magically roll out of bed. The entire reason that I bought the race-car bed was to make sure he was safe.

His screams grow louder and more pronounced. “Come on, let’s get you checked out.” I lift him into my arms, the cries not settling as I bring him into my bedroom and put him on the mattress.

“Daddy!” he wails the minute that he’s not in my arms. It’s hard to tell if the pain is that bad or it’s the emotional fall that hurt him worse.

But he’s not like other kids. Tyler is a ticking timebomb. Any injuries, even mild, in most instances could be devastating for him.

I quickly throw on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, slipping on my shoes before hurrying out the front door. I head downstairs, relieved that Camden is already waiting. If he wasn’t, I’d have grabbed a cab.

Camden glances me over but doesn’t say anything about my attire. “Mountain Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital,” I say, needing him to get us there right away.

“Are you sure you don’t want an ambulance or helicopter ride?” Camden asks.

I’m doing what I can to not scare Tyler as much as possible. The last time we took an ambulance, about six months ago, afterwards he cried every time he saw one on the road or heard sirens. Hysterical, inconsolable sobs.

It’s heartbreaking to watch and not be able to do anything to help.

I cradle Tyler in the backseat, keeping him to my chest. “It’s okay, buddy, we’re going to make sure everything is fine.”

My voice cracks and I can’t help but worry that he’s just like Wren, fragile. A bump on the playground could be fatal.

Camden pulls up out front of the emergency room and I rush Tyler inside, carrying him to the main desk. “My son, he has Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He fell and I need someone to examine him.”
