Good News from Iraq

WE HAD A SLIGHT PROBLEM. Despite the fact that, in the eyes of the Americans and Iraqis alike, Jeff’s and my aid project was succeeding, it still lacked a name—and this almost gave Heather Coyne an aneurysm. How can something not have an acronym? She e-mailed us and demanded we find a good acronym: immediately. So we came up with Humanitarian Aid Network of Distribution (HAND); this way, we joked, we could have HAND jobs every day. I know—we were under a lot of stress.

With a name out of the way and Jody now in Amman serving as, among other more important things, our hype mouthpiece, HAND could be used as a selling point for the CPA. We were hardly trying to do PR for CPA, but if good publicity was a consequence of the job we enjoyed, so be it. A TV crew from the United States contacted Heather about trying to find the “Good News from Iraq.” And Heather turned to us.
