Chapter 24

Marcus and Nicky walked back to Adam’s house side by side. At first, Nicky wasn’t going to say anything at all, but, “Why did no one come see Kell?”

Marcus slowed down. “What do you mean?”

“He told me that there are seven of you. Seven Originals. And I’ve never met a single one of you until now. Why?”

Marcus was quiet for a while. “We each went our own ways.”

Shaking his head in disapproval, Nicky kept walking when suddenly Marcus grabbed Nicky’s arm and halted him. They both looked down to see they were wearing matching silver cuffs. “We were all made for a purpose. The Gods created us first, but we were feral. Primal and lost to boot.” Marcus almost smiled at the memory and it gave Nicky the chills. “In human years, we would have looked like we were seven years old. We felt no hunger. Just… pain. The magic we bore damn near ate us whole.” He continued to walk and Nicky followed. “It took some time before we were able to control ourselves. We’d stuck together at first, but our magic would bounce off one another and make a mess.”

“You had no balance.”

“Exactly.” Marcus sighed, staring at the rising sun, “And once the angels caught up with us… the problems got worse. And then more and more Fae and others were created and were looking to us for guidance. We were still learning ourselves at the time, so it was mayhem for a while. Envy got the better of many and they craved the powers of others. By then, lines were drawn and we had to rally together or split apart. Some wanted to fight, others wanted peace… others just wanted.”

“You were the peace maker, right?”

“I used to be.”

“Used to be?”

Marcus shook his head, “A story for another day, perhaps.”

“So did Kell and Adam hate each other?”

“Gods no,” Marcus took the hill in wide strides, “but once the Fae began to fight with one another… and the angels… and then humans got involved, everything just exploded. We thought it would be best to separate. Kell wanted everyone to live in peace and harmony – a nice dream, but not a reality anyone would strive for at the time. And considering I was made to bring peace and harmony, that’s saying something.”

“So why didn’t you?”

“Why didn’t I bring the peace?”

Nicky nodded.

“Who says I didn’t? But like everything in life, there needs to be balance. You can’t have peace without war. Day without night. Hate without love. Balance, Nicky, also brings meaning and weight to all we do.”

“So… coexistence can’t be reached, is that what you’re saying?”

Marcus shrugged. “It’s a dream worthy of pursuit, but will come with the endless battles and short-lived victories.”

What the fuck kind of answer was that? Nicky bit his tongue and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Kell never said anything bad about any of you. Not once.”

“And we would never say anything negative about him. Our separation wasn’t out of hate, it was out of preservation.
