don’t DRIVE BLIND at night

TOP SCREWUPS

• Pretending your eyes are young

• Using bright gauge lights

• Having a dirty windshield

Do you remember taking driver’s ed? Your instructor gave you some information on how to avoid being temporarily blinded by the headlights of the oncoming cars. You laughed at the very idea. Cars’ headlights aren’t that blinding, you thought. Now if you’re over thirty, you may be wishing you had paid a bit more attention.

Back It Up

As we age, our eyes’ ability to see in limited light declines. It starts happening at around age thirty, but you don’t notice it until a few years later when you’re driving at night and you suddenly find it hard to see. Don’t drive like your eyesight is exactly as it was when you were twenty. You will need more following distance at night between cars. In daylight, three seconds is considered a safe following distance, but at night you should increase it to five or more if you are tired.
