Chapter 6

“Evy, what did she say?”

I turned to face Kestrel. “Seven thousand dollars for one painting.”

Kestrel’s eyebrows rose. “Wow.” She swallowed and a hard look lodged on her face. “He is so busted.”

I walked down the stairs, feeling a bit stunned. Seven thousand dollars. And he was only giving us a few hundred per painting. If he hadn’t been so greedy and mean, we never would have suspected him.

“I knew she was good,” Kestrel added in a hushed voice. “But, well, it’s just nice other people can see how special her paintings are too.”

“There’s more.” I took Cocoa’s reins.

“Yeah?” Kestrel asked, when I didn’t follow up with an explanation.

I climbed into the saddle. “Let’s get going.” Only a couple of people were in sight and they weren’t paying any attention to us, but even that was too risky. If the wrong person found out someone was looking for my mom and willing to offer a reward... Well, I just didn’t trust human nature that much. “I’ll tell you on the way.”

Kestrel nodded.

We rode back toward Snake Canyon at a trot, then slowed to a walk when we left the road behind.

“There’s a reward,” I said, jumping right into the most troublesome news. “I don’t know how much but it’s for whoever knows where my mom lives. And they say that Laticia Taylor may not be her real name.”

“What do you mean?” Kestrel asked, sounding as flabbergasted as I still felt. “Her real name?”

I nodded, feeling sick. Who was after my mom? It had to be someone terrible if she had to change her name to elude them. Could it be gangsters? Criminals?

Then a terrible thought jumped into my mind. Once, last year, Mom told me more than she intended: that her self-imposed exile was going to end in a few years. Ever since then I’d wondered if her hiding out had something to do with me. I mean, why else would she come to the bush when I was a baby and leave when I neared adulthood? Add to this the new information, and it made sense that whoever was looking for my mom was also looking for me. Suddenly, I felt even sicker.

“Evy, are you okay? Are you getting some psychic impressions?”

“Sorry.” I shook my head to clear it. “What did you say?”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I managed to say, though it wasn’t remotely true.

“I’m totally shocked too.”

I couldn’t speak my new fear aloud. It was too scary. So I said the next thing that bothered me. “My name isn’t really Evy Taylor.”

“The Evy part might be right.” Kestrel said, twirling Twitchy’s fuzzy mane.

“I hope so. I can’t imagine myself being someone else.”

“I know. I can’t imagine you not being Evy either. Even though you’re still you no matter what your name is, but...” Kestrel shrugged, helplessly. “Let’s talk about it later. We need time to think about it first. And besides, Edward’s waiting to be scared beyond reason.”

I felt myself perk up. Edward was the perfect diversion from this troubling revelation.
